Aviation Organization Takes Flight To Save Sea Turtles Affected By Weather Conditions
Cope Cod Massachusetts has been hit hard by the weather this season. As winter looms over the horizon, unexpected cold snaps have wreaked havoc on the local sea turtle population, and conservationists worry about the future of these turtles as the temperatures continue to plummet along the coastline. As a result of the Gulf Stream, which is characterized by mild temperatures, sea turtles have been carried past their usual destination into waters which are significantly cooler than these marine reptiles are able to handle. The unfortunate cold-blooded victims are then unable to function because of the drastic temperature difference and end up stranded on the beaches of Cape Cod. This is where “Turtles Fly Too” comes into play. A non-profit organization, comes into play. An aviation-focused group, their program is dedicated to saving the multitudes of sea turtles that wash up on the beaches every year, and they safely relocate the animals with the assistance of highly-trained pilots to warmer locations such as Florida and South Carolina, where aquariums and rehabilitation facilities ensure the recovery of the cold-stunned turtles. This season, “Turtles Fly Too” is requesting the help of pilots from up north to aid in the huge rescue effort prompted by the threatening weather conditions. The organization has been highly successful throughout previous years and with the unusual load of stranding cases, they are desperate for additional pilots. Who would ever imagine that such a program would exist for the well-being and conservation of these ocean creatures? It is an inspiring and amazing endeavor.
