Conservationists Advocate To Prohibit Turtle Trapping In Effort To Conserve Declining State Population
Thursday morning was an exciting day for many conservationists, as representatives from several groups attended the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for an important meeting. This was not a waste of time, however. The passionate attendees had a vital mission, to prevent the future decline of their native turtle species. As of now, there are no regulations regarding the commercial trapping and selling of turtles in the state of Arkansas, and this gives harvesters the unfortunate freedom to remove as many chelonians as they desire, which is incredibly detrimental to the already diminishing population of native turtle species. The market is also high prominent in other countries, and many turtles are being transported to foreign lands to be traded and sold. The conservationists present at this meeting advocated for the game commission to halt this harmful practice in a necessary step towards preserving the wildlife habitat throughout the state of Arkansas. As officials take into consideration this heart-felt request, they will announce the final determination approximately a month from now, and until then, everyone is encouraged to submit their opinions to the commission in order to strengthen this highly important and necessary petition.
