Snapping turtles showing less contamination from PCBs
Snapping turtles in Turkey Creek are showing less contamination from PCBs and that’s a good sign for the Detroit River.
“The PCB burdens are declining,” Detroit River Canadian Cleanup Remedial Action Plan co-ordinator Claire Sanders said Friday.
“I think it’s a really good news story. We know that those efforts to clean up contaminated sediment have been successful and our wildlife around here is healthier as a result.”
The Detroit River Canadian Cleanup is holding its eighth annual Detroit River Evening June 14 at Mackenzie Hall. The group will release its annual report at the free event and have speakers to highlight research and efforts to get the Detroit River removed from the list of Great Lakes’ Areas of Concern.
The snapping turtle, a species of special concern, is used as an indicator of contaminants such as PCBs and mercury because they eat a lot of fish, Sanders said. They also live more than 40 years.
