Middle Schoolers Prove Themselves To Be The Conservationists Of The Future

Illinois is home to Emydoidea blandingii, a species classified as endangered by the IUCN. Their populations have declined drastically over the previous years and they are in a critical state due to harvesting as well as deforestation. Thankfully there are multiple organizations which have developed conservation initiatives for these turtles, one of which being the Adopt-a-turtle program headed by the Lake County Forest Preserve District. Funded by donations, this important work has been highly successful, boasting the release of 250 turtles over the past three years; however, two students from sixth grade have shown themselves to be valuable contributors to conservation. Rachael and Danika raised $290, much of which they donated towards the Adopt-a-turtle program. The remaining funds were utilized in restoring the native flora of the preserve. By collecting and selling scrap metal, the two girls generated an impressive amount of funds, and this demonstrates their passion and dedication for the conservation of Emydoidea blandingii and their native habitat. Such commitment from young people is an inspiration for all and proves that they are the future generation of conservationists.
