TSA-India Heads Conservation Seminar Focusing On Manouria Emys
Dimapur is the largest city in Nagaland, which is a country located in India. India is also the headquarters of TSA-India, an international branch of the Turtle Survival Alliance, which has most recently been so heavily involved in the Madagascar confiscation rescue effort. Within the city of Dimapur, the Nagaland Zoological Park is a popular tourist destination as well as a hotspot for conservation activities, with the most recent being their workshop on chelonian conservation. As part of an effort to educate the public on the importance of their native turtles and tortoises, the seminar focused on Manouria Emys and their reproduction as a solution to their current status. Director of TSA-India, Dr. Shailendra Singh, as well as Dr. Rajiv Basumatary were the main spokesmen at the event and educated the attendees on many other chelonian species in addition to Manouria Emys. With their large breeding group of these impressive tortoises, the Nagaland Zoological Park plans to partner with TSA-India to coordinate a successful breeding program for the species and they plan to initiate additional outreach programs such as this workshop to continue to inspire awareness to the people of Nagaland.
