Wildlife fund shells out cash to turtle Friends
The Friends of Kingston Inner Harbour group has received a grant from the World Wildlife Fund-Canada.
A $1,000 grant will fund two public awareness events this spring to allow the Friends to educate Kingstonians on the turtle populations that make their home on the shores of downtown Kingston.
“We are pretty excited about getting a grant from WWF-Canada,” Mary Farrar, president of Friends of Kingston Inner Harbour, said.
The Friends of Kingston Inner Harbour works to protect three identified turtle species in Doug Fluhrer Park, located on the western bank of the St. Lawrence River north of the LaSalle Causeway. The northern map turtle, painted turtle and snapping turtle all make their home along the shores, and seemingly in great concentration in Doug Fluhrer Park.
“We want to make sure that people understand the delicacy here, and take care with the turtles,” Farrar said.
The turtles are at greatest risk during the spring, when they leave the shore and seek out long-used nesting areas in parks, and along public trails, roadways and streets.
