University’s Chelonian Assurance Colony Provides Opportunity For Students To Participate In Conservation Project
Dalton State University has a unique gem hidden within the department of biology’s extensive resources. Their very own Turtle Assurance Colony is home to sixty-five chelonians of ten individual species, and their partnership with the Turtle Survival Alliance has been key to their substantial successes in the recent years. Not only is their collection utilized for classroom instruction, but the students are heavily involved with the husbandry of the endangered animals; in addition, they are working closely with conservation groups to research the habits and requirements of Kinixys erosa. The Turtle Assurance Colony (TAC) has successfully reproduced the species and they are currently in the process of expanding, so that they will be capable of handling increasing numbers of animals. With larger outdoor enclosures and even a greenhouse, the facility will be better equipped to maintain a variety of species. The students are thoroughly trained in detail regarding the care and upkeep of the collection, and this gives them invaluable experience in the field of herpetology; in addition, preparing them for a career in wildlife and conservation. Already, many of the former Dalton State graduates have continued on into herpetology careers and the University encourages new freshman to join the important program and introduce them to the world of conservation.
