Iowa Resident Opens Her Doors As A Non-Profit For Abandoned Tortoises
It all started with one sick tortoise which desperately needed a home, and one kind heart who fulfilled that pressing need, eventually evolving into the Big and Small Tortoise Rescue and Sanctuary. Kimberly Vanous now cares for a houseful of rescued tortoises, and is even making definite plans to relocate to a large property in order to expand her admirable operation. The organization was founded over a year ago, and Vanous has already up-scaled to multi-level habitats as well as an extensive outdoor grazing area for the warmer months. Her residents receive the most quality care, as Vanous believes that very few people know how to correctly care for these beautiful reptiles. She does offer tortoises for adoption after a thorough quarantine period, and currently maintains 13 animals at the rescue, which is currently full. With her future plans to expand the facility, the goal remains to be able to accept any tortoise that is surrendered into her care.
