Dedicated Conservationist Leads The Way For Caretta caretta Conservation

One Isle of Palms resident is an inspiration for conservationists around the world. Mary Pringle heads the Island Turtle team of Sullivans Island and the Isle of Palms and has been hard at work to protect the Caretta caretta for 20 years. Her passion has landed her with the July Jefferson Award, and as she continues to work with these amazing animals, thousands of hatchlings successfully make it safely back to the ocean where they belong, providing them with the greatest chance of survival. With a lifetime of dedication to conservation, Mary Pringle inventories and guides each hatchling back to the waves. As a result, the population of this species has been rising, and with the assistance of more conservationists like Pringle, the future of the Caretta caretta will be secure for decades to come.

Did You Know…

Studies have shown that developing chelonian ova may communicate together which can result in simultaneous hatching, even in clutches laid at different dates. Scientists suggest that this may be due to the fact that the embryos emit CO2, and increasing levels might increase the metabolism of the premature ova and cause them to hatch earlier.
