Navy Partners With Virginia Aquarium For Tracking And Research Project
The U.S. Navy is demonstrating their commitment to sea turtle conservation by their partnership with the Virginia Aquarium. It is vital that their warships are aware of the location of the turtles as they are a significant danger to these endangered animals. The Navy works closely with the Virginia Aquarium to track the sea turtles and research their migration patterns as well as habitat and behavioral activities. The Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act are a major motivator for this research as they regulate where and when the Navy can conduct certain activities. Based on funding from the Navy, the Aquarium is able to tag the turtles in order to collect detailed tracking data. Following their precisely organized research methods, they submit an environmental impact statement which is required in order for the Navy to continue their activities in the Atlantic ocean. This partnership will greatly benefit the sea turtles as well as creating a valuable data source for both researchers as well as the U.S. Navy.
