Unconventional Treatment Proves Successful for an Otherwise Permanently Disabled Gopherus polyphemus

Who would have thought that a popular treatment for humans would have such a dramatic effect on a tortoise. This Gopherus polyphemus had a fortunate fate. After being hit by a car, her shell was left cracked and back limbs nearly paralyzed. She was discovered after the accident and transported to the South Florida Wildlife Center for treatment. Further examination revealed multiple eggs inside her body that were ready to be laid; however, due to her injuries, she would have great difficulty accomplishing this task. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Renata Schneider, Electro-accupunture was performed in an attempt to stimulate the nerve funtion in order that she would regain hind leg mobility. So far this treatment has demonstrated significant results, and the tortoise is now able to move around with much less difficulty. Treatments will be continued in the hopes of a full recovery for this remarkable animal.
