Another Conservation Success Story for a U.K. Zoo

Did you know that there are approximately only 60 Cuora galbinifrons kept in zoos around the globe? One of these zoos is the Paignton Zoo Environmental Park in the U.K. Just recently this zoo successfully hatched two eggs from the galbinifrons, the second success since 2013. Paignton zoo currently keeps five mature adults, with one of the pairs producing two eggs this time around. The eggs were incubated in a special incubator located in the zoo’s reptile nursery. A proper temperature gradient composed of cooler periods and warmer periods was critical to successful mating and nesting. The habitat was designed to be highly natural so that the turtles could exhibit behaviors seen in the wild. This striking species from South-east Asia is listed on the IUCN as critically endangered; therefore, all efforts need to be made to conserve and maintain assurance colonies around the world.
