Western Pond Turtles to be Released into Yosemite

The Western Pond Turtle, Actinemys marmorata, is one of the many species native to the famous California Yosemite National Park; however, this species is highly threatened by deforestation as well as predators. The Yosemite National Park is working closely with the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens to conserve this species as well as protect its critical ecosystem. Next month will begin a series of releases which will strive to repopulate the dwindling numbers of this aquatic North American species. Each individual will be fitted with a special radio-tracking device which will allow researchers to track their progress and gain valuable information about their status in the wild. Unfortunately, the decrease in population may be a result of good intentions, as park rangers remove fallen logs and other various natural items from the river. Raccoons may also be a threat to these turtles. The Yosemite Conservancy holds the health of its ecosystem in high regard and hopes that the efforts made to conserve the Western Pond Turtle will be successful and beneficial to all species of wildlife that inhabit the park.
