Olive Ridley turtle rescue efforts: Madras HC imposes cost on Tamil Nadu govt

The Madras high court has made the decision to fine the Tamil Nadu government due to the fact that they disobeyed orders to take action against the sea turtle murders that have been occuring along the coast. The high court presented an order to hire a non-governement agency involved with sea turtle conservation as well as to submit a report on the incidents. The government refused to take action for two months, when they then submitted their report. The high court has called this a breach of their orders. According to the Tamil Nadu government, sea turtle deaths have decreased over the past year, but the high court insists that they have no solid records on nesting and the actual numbers of turtle deaths, which is why they were required to hire a separate organization to record the data properly. To reduce sea turtle mortalities, nets which allow trapped turtles to escape are now being utilized. These are known as Turtle Excluder Devices.
