Hicatee Workshop Held In Belize Along With the TSA

While the Hicatee, Dermatemys mawii, was on the brink of extinction not so long ago, the species is doing way better today thanks to huge collaboration efforts and commitment from the TSA, Belize Foundation for Research and Environmental Education (BFREE), the Belize Fisheries Department, and the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. Did You Know…

The shell of the turtle consists of numerous small bones which are covered by separate plates of keratin called scutes. The soft shell turtles, pig-nose turtles and the leatherback sea turtle have lost their scutes leaving the shell covered only by skin.
