NJ Ends This Year’s Harvest Season For Malaclemys ssp
An order was issued by the Enrivronmental Protection Department to stop any further harvesting of Malaclemys Terrapin species. The order will last until the end of the March, the day the harvest season ends. Last year more than 3,500 turtles were taken from two locations to raise them for the market. The state is now studying ways to protect the turtle population.

Malaclemys terrapin species were very common and were used as a main food source of protein a long time ago. They almost faced extinction in the mid 1800s/ early 1900s due to heavy and extensive hunting.
