7 Dermatemys mawii Hatched In Belize

These are the first hatchlings from the captive breeding program located at BFREE Field Station in Belize and managed by the Turtle Survival Alliance. This species native from Central America underwent a drastic decline and is now Critically Endangered. These 7 hatchling are being carefully observed (daily) by the TSA. A PhD student, Nichole Bishop, at the University of Florida who focuses her study on this species will collect feces twice per week, and will analyze it for gut microflora. The TSA team reported that the hatchling show a noticeable growth in only two weeks.

Did You Know…

Dermatemys mawii is almost fully aquatic since it is barely capable of moving in land. The only time it comes out of the water is to nest.
