Update on the Philippine turtle crisis

On what is an otherwise light Saturday in the news, there is an update on the Palawan Forest Turtle crisis that unfolded last week. Many, many people and organizations have come together to respond to this crisis. Thankfully, more than 2,200 of these rare turtles have been cleared to be released back into the wild. Many others are still receiving treatment from the team of veterinarians and other caregivers on site. Funds are still needed, so please consider donating. One of our staff members has been in contact with one of the TSA responders on site in hopes that we can arrange to send some needed supplies. Use this link to donate to the Turtle Survival Alliance to help with this crisis.

Did You Know…

Originally described in the 1920s, only four specimens of the Philippine Forest Turtle were known to science until about twelve years ago when the species was rediscovered on Palawan. Since then, a concerted effort to conduct surveys and understand their biology has been underway, and reintroduction studies have been conducted. This confiscation included many more specimens than were assumed to have existed.
