There Is Hope For The Rafetus swinhoei
The Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle is the most endangered species of turtle of the world. Only one female is remaining as far was we know and she is estimated to be over 100 years old. Since 2008, numerous attempt have been conducted in order to breed this species. Each year the female has laid eggs which, unfortunately, were all infertile. Scientists recently found out that the reason behind this is the male having a damaged sexual organ. One of the last hope to save this species was given a shot — artificial insemination. This procedure was studied and performed by the top scientists from China, Australia, and the United States. Both specimens are estimated to be more than 100 years old, therefore time is obviously of the essence. If it turns out that the eggs will be fertile, this species is most likely to be saved from extinction.
