Turn Those Lights Off! It’s Turtle Nesting Season!
From May 1st to October 31st, it’s turtle nesting season in Florida. Therefore, all lights visible from the beaches must be turned off from 9pm to 5am. As you may know, artificial lights have a significant negative impact on hatching turtles; they lure them inland instead of seaward. As a result, may hatchlings get lost and end up dying from dehydration or becoming a prey for other animals. Violating this marine turtle lighting ordinance can result in a $500 fine and 6 months in county jail. Need more tips to ensure successful nesting of these beautiful creatures? Visit the article.
