4000 Turtles Saved From Smuggling

On Thursday, more than 4000 freshwater turtles were seized by custom officials in Pakistan.The smuggling attempt is believed to be the biggest consignment in the history of Pakistan. Although this species is protected by the law, it is commonly being smuggled. Last year thanks to the Chinese authorities, the Gilgit-Baltistan and the Sindh wildlife departments, more than 200 smuggled turtles found their way back to Pakistan from China.

Pseudemydura umbrina is a Critically Endangered species from Australia. In 1980, only 2 populations were known to be remained. This species is unique among Chelonians since females will dig its nest using their front limbs instead of using their hind limbs. Also, females from this species only lay 3 to 5 eggs a year.
