12 rare turtles with names like ‘Thor’ and ‘Taco’ released into wetlands
Consumers Energy employees released a dozen of rare juvenile Blanding’s Turtles into the wetlands of Saginaw County on Thursday, May 16.
The bale of turtles, all females, was released in a wetland near the James Township Hall, 6060 Swan Creek Road, an area where the energy company did construction for its Saginaw Trail Pipeline project.
Last year, the company rescued the turtle eggs, two adult turtles and a juvenile Blanding’s Turtle, from along the same path the 12 juvenile turtles were released. The adults were moved to a safe location where they laid 12 eggs that were incubated, hatched and raised by the company’s contract herpetologist over the winter, according to Consumers Energy officials.
“At Consumers Energy we demonstrate our guiding principle of ‘leaving it better than we find it’ every day. The Saginaw Trail Pipeline project and the rescue of these rare turtles reaffirm our commitment to preserving Michigan’s environment as we modernize our gas infrastructure,” said Charles Crews, Consumers Energy’s vice president of gas operations.
