Sea turtles around Yakushima in southern Japan likely prey to Chinese poachers
As many as 128 dead sea turtles collected from a group of smugglers in China’s Zhejiang province included at least two red sea turtles with identification tags attached by a Japanese conservation group on the southern Japanese island of Yakushima, according to members of the nature organization.
The number of sea turtles visiting the island has plummeted by nearly a quarter in the last five years, and members of the Yakushima Umigame-kan group told reporters at the Kagoshima Prefectural Government on Dec. 18 that the reason behind the decline is “highly likely to be poaching and other human activities.”
