Burglars Make Off With Massive Load Of Chelonoidis Nigra From Critical Breeding Center
The Galapagos Islands are home to the infamous Chelonoidis nigra complex, consisting of fifteen species, four of which are already extinct and the remainder are threatened with extinction. Thanks to a breeding facility on the islands, these tortoises are well on their way to a monumental comeback with the assistance of researchers which contribute vital studies and data in order to maintain the greatest genetic diversity within each subspecies. The newest development at the facility is frightening news, however. More than 120 of their tortoises have been stolen, totaling two subspecies, and as of yet no suspects have been detained. The theft occurred at the breeding center on Isabela Island, which is just one of the multiple locations which work to preserve these impressive animals. Such an unfortunate occurrence is devastating news for this breeding facility, as each tortoise is a contribution towards creating the greatest chance of a comeback within their species. As officials investigate this alarming incident, they will work nonstop to bring justice to the thieves which wrongfully stole some of the most valuable animals on the Galapagos Islands.
