Researchers Race To Save Rescued Victim Of Shocking Trash Ingestion
Researchers in Kinmen have been struggling in a valiant attempt to save an unfortunate Chelonia mydas, which was rescued in Liaoluo just last month. The sick turtle is the victim of littering, and because of the ingestion of the trash, has been expelling pieces for nearly two weeks. As staff work to rehabilitate this as well as two other sea turtles at the Fisheries Research Institute, they report that all of them have stabilized and they expect a full recovery for the animals. Previous blood-work showed abnormal chemistry values and was a great cause of concern for the rescue staff. Collisions with boats is just one of the many threats that these turtles face today, in addition to the fatal trash ingestion incidents, and as such it is vital that we raise awareness for the harmful effectsof littering on wildlife and their important ecosystems.
