Turtle Rescue Continue Their Efforts Towards The Conservation of Malaclemys terrapin
Sea Isle Terrapin Rescue staff have not had a dull moment this season; in fact, they have been nearly overwhelmed in their efforts to protect the native Malaclemys terrapin which has been in decline over recent years. In the town of Sea Isle in New York, Malaclemys terrapin are frequently observed making their way onto land to nest and lay their eggs; however, this makes for an incredibly dangerous situation for these beautiful turtles. Although they have a long lifespan of approximately 40 years, the majority of the population never survives to this age as a result of new development, as well as road deaths and predation. This is where the Sea Isle Terrapin Rescue comes in. Their staff spend their days patrolling the city in search of turtles which need to be relocated, as well as ensuring that any nests are sufficiently protected by placing the eggs in a safer environment. Their newest invention, “turtle boxes”, are an ingenious way to make sure that the eggs hatch safely. Over 340 turtles have already been saved from a deadly fate this season, and as the rescue continues their incessant work, they raise awareness for the dire status of these turtles which call Sea Isle their home.
