Conservationists Fight To Save Vital Tortoise Habitat From The Fate Of Development
Letters upon letters have been arriving at the Clark County commissioners office over the past weeks, and they are all giving the exact same message- “Save Gopherus agassizii!”. And this is not surprising, given the fact that Clark County is on the verge of auctioning away 40,000 acres of prime wildlife and tortoise habitat to developers, who will quickly destroy the delicate ecosystem and turn it into a busy metropolis. Even though Gopherus agassizii is protected under the Endangered Species Act, the county is attempting to sweep US Fish and Wildlife under the rug in order to accomplish their goals. If the bill to allow the sale of the land is passed, it will be fatal to the tortoise population and thousands of other endangered species, not to mention the danger that the Endangered Species Act in in because of new laws being passed. Not only have more than 3,000 letters been sent to oppose this bill, but multiple conservation organizations have signed a letter, pleading with county to recognize the terrible detrimental effects of this decision and to take into account the importance of conserving our last remaining ecosystems and their wild inhabitants.
