Midland painted turtle now a species at risk
Midland painted turtles have been swimming under the radar. Until now.
It had been the only Ontario turtle species not on the species at risk list until the declaration was made in late April by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada.
The declaration was made due to increasing numbers of turtles being hit by cars and the historical loss of 70 per cent of southern Ontario wetland habitat.
But it’s not all bad news.
“This is actually a good news thing,” said Tom Goldsmith, wildlife specialist and animal care supervisor at Wye Marsh near Midland.
“Having them included now means that the government is going to put some resources into making sure they are kept safe,” he said.
