Conservation Initiative Professional Raises Awareness About Sea Turtle Protection As Nesting Season Approaches
It’s almost that time again. The sea turtles will be back to our coastlines to deposit their precious cargo; subsequently, that means local residents and beachgoers need to be on the lookout as well as follow specific protocols to ensure a successful season. The Think Turtle Conservation Initiative took matters into their own hands with an in depth educational seminar focused on taking measures to protect the sea turtle nests that will be laid in the coming months. Taught by staff member Kelly Wallace, the presentation suggested creative and safe methods that residents can use to ensure the hatchling turtles survive, such as wire mesh covers with anchors and wearing gloves, as well as the recommendation to contact a rescue organization if a nest is located in a vulnerable area. There are also several programs that collect reports of sea turtle sightings in order to research populations worldwide. Wallace is confident that this educational event will give attendees a greater understanding of the importance of preserving these ocean giants.
