Conservationists Report Fatal Effects Of New Development On Emydoidea blandingii

Conservationists are concerned over the future of the native Emydoidea blandingii on Amherst Island in Canada. The reason being the construction of new wind turbines in the area, which they worry will cause massive habitat loss and a decline in the population of these turtles. Although the group known as the Protection of Amherst Island appealed to halt further work on the project, the Environmental Review Tribunal dismissed their request and merely put a restriction on the completion of the new development, on the condition that they would not build from April through November in order to protect the reproducing blandingii. However, work has still continued and residents are reporting that the area has become a busy and loud construction area. Conservationists worry that many turtles are being killed as a result of the high traffic that is frequenting the area, and the Ministry of the Environment has put a wildlife biologist in place to oversee the remaining development and to ensure that the turtles are fully protected throughout the process; additionally, they have hired a professional to implement a plan to reduce the harmful ecological effects of the turbine construction.
