Environmentalists Raise Concern Over The Harmful Effects Of Recent Development Proposals On The Caretta Caretta Population
The Australian Sunshine Coast is a hotspot for nesting sea turtles each and every year as hundreds arrive to deposit their precious cargo before disappearing back into the ocean; however, according to researchers, this may not be the case in the coming years. Yaroomba Beach is just one location along the coast and the Sekisui House is applying for the authorization to initialize the construction of a massive five-star hotel directly on the beach. Studies have shown that 24 sea turtles have nested in the exact area in the recent years and environmentalists argue that this new development violates the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). They say the harmful effects of lighting and human disturbance will cause a significant decrease in the nesting rates, and that it is vital to take into consideration these aspects before moving forward with such projects.
