A new hope for endangered Bell’s turtle species
With over 90% of Bell’s turtle (Myuchelys bellii) nest being threatened by predators, it’s a big deal to find a small population of the turtles on Richard Daugherty’s property. And, more surprisingly, he uses a trained dog to find the nests!
Researchers are raising over 100 hatchlings now with the intention of releasing them back into the area in order to boosts wild populations.

Did You Know…
Bell’s turtle nests are dug out in riverbanks of sand or loam during late September to January. Eggs take 80 days to hatch and are thus vulnerable to nest predation for an extended period.
