Discover What Goes On Behind The Scenes At One Of The Most Important Sea Turtle Conservation Centers In The Nation
Baltimore, Maryland is home to the famous National Aquarium; and additionally, one of the largest sea turtle rescue facilities in the country. After this winter’s unexpected cold temperatures, staff have been working nonstop to rehabilitate the hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles that have succumbed to the power of the elements. Their incredible work would not have been possible without the dedication of their volunteers, who have sacrificed their time and energy to further the mission of the aquarium and assist in saving the sea turtles who desperately need individualized medical care. Staff at the aquarium were recently preparing their successfully rehabilitated animals for release, and it was a huge project to load up each turtle and transport them to Florida where the water was warmer. The 13 hour trip was exhausting, consisting of several stops to pick up more sea turtles from partnering facilities, but on Wednesday, thirty-one animals were released back into the ocean. The National Aquarium’s partnership with other organizations which share their mission is an inspiring story of conservation at its best.
