Discover The Origins And Meet The People Behind The Incredible Mission Of The American Tortoise Rescue

Who would have thought that what started as a thoughtful birthday gift from a wife to her husband would be transformed into 30 years of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. This is precisely what happened to Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson in Malibu, CA. It did not take long for them to realize, after the purchase of two Testudo horsfieldii, that there was a pressing need for turtle and tortoise rescues around the country. The impressive couple does not take their task lightly, seeing how they have successfully re-homed 4000 chelonians from their rescue, and relocated to Malibu for the very purpose of running their rehabilitation facility. No turtle or tortoise is discriminated against at the American Tortoise Rescue, as the pair dubbed their program; in fact, they opened their doors for seventy Trachemys scripta elegans which were destined for euthanasia, and Tellem even reports that the species is nearly non-existent in the wild in California as a result of the pet trade, poaching, and deforestation. One hundred rescued turtles and tortoises currently call the non-profit organization their home and the happy couple plans to continue their admirable work for years to come.
