Local Community Unites To Break Records In Their Commitment To Marine Conservation
The Sunshine Coast in Australia is one of the prime nesting destinations for endangered sea turtles; however, it is also a prime area for dumping, and this debris can be fatal to the turtles which come to lay their eggs each season. Because of this unfortunate danger, the Sunshine Coast Council organizes an annual beach clean-up event, which draws volunteers from far and wide. This year’s project broke records as more than 300 participants amassed over 1800 pounds of trash spanning 19 locations along the coast. The event even attracted local organizations which also chipped in to create a safer environment for marine wildlife. Alongside the beach-cleaning team, divers also searched waterways for additional debris below the water’s surface. These dedicated efforts will ensure the survival of many more sea turtle hatchlings as they make their already dangerous trek to their ocean home, and this community is a wonderful example of teamwork at its finest.
