The Memory Of One Of The Most Important Contributors To Sea Turtle Conservation Will Live On
One of the greatest contributors to sea turtle conservation recently passed away last week. One might assume that this was an important biologist or ecologist, but in reality, this was Ridley Ranger, a small Cairn Terrier. Ridley Ranger was a turtle dog, trained to sniff out and locate turtle tests along with his trainer, Donna Shaver. Working tirelessly along the Padre Island National Seashore, the dedicated pair saved countless sea turtle nests and the intelligent canine even protected the tiny hatchlings as they made their way to the ocean. He was born to do this type of work as Shaver trained him since he was a puppy, and he is even the star of multiple publications. The two were inseparable and when Ridley succumbed to a stroke due to cancer, Shaver was heartbroken; however, he will not be forgotten and the appreciation as well as the memory of his lifetime of conservation work will continue to live on.
