New Development On Its Way To Decimating Chelodina longicollis Populations
Two conservationists decided that they could wait no longer to act on behalf of their native turtle species, after realizing that they were being buried alive with no concern for their well-being. As a result of new development in the Liverpool area, old dams are being filled to allow for construction, thus creating a fatal situation for the resident turtles. Wildlife Rescuer Kane Durrant and biologist Ricky Spenser are pleading with the council to take action against this unsustainable practice, as this is putting Chelodina longicollis on a fast track towards extinction. They suggest relocation efforts as well as dam inspections to halt the unnecessary deaths of these turtles. They argue that enforcing regulations is mandatory, and they must be implemented before the species goes extinct, as merely a yearly 2% decline causes a massive population loss.
