USA:- Hundreds watch release of endangered sea turtles
Hundreds of onlookers turned out to a sea shell-dotted stretch of beach between the jetties and the south pavilion Wednesday afternoon at Isla Blanca Park to watch 60 endangered Atlantic green sea turtles be released into the Gulf of Mexico.
The turtles, which are native to the area, did not enjoy the winter weather that brought the wonder of snow to the Rio Grande Valley last weekend.
Because it got so cold, the temperature in the Laguna Madre dropped below 55 degrees, stunning the sea turtles into shock.
The majority of the endangered green sea turtles live in the Laguna Madre and wash up on Boca Chica or on the mudflats, said Kat Lillie, assistant curator at Sea Turtle Inc.
A total of 72 cold-stunned turtles washed up.
Some of the turtles needed a little more medical attention, so they stayed behind, Lillie said.
