Ghana’s Sea Turtles Plummeting Down The Path Of Extinction
Poaching is a major threat for Ghana’s sea turtles, as the Fisheries Commission has come to realize. As a result of their popularity as a main dish, the animals are in the process of being poached to extinction. Even though there are laws protecting the turtles, including punishment by fine or imprisonment, poaching is still highly present on the coastal region of the country. An officer from the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission in the Western Region says that education is key to raise awareness about the plight of the sea turtles because many areas do not welcome new conservation laws. Tourism is an important aspect of the country’s economy, and the turtles are a huge attraction; however, the increased poaching means less tourists will make the area their destination. Distinct measures must be taken to prevent the total extinction of these ocean creatures.
