Group Of Lepidochelys kempii In Critical Condition After Unexpected Cold Front
The recent winter weather might be welcomed by many people, but for sea turtles, this can mean a difference between life and death. The National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay recently took over the care of 15 Lepidochelys kempii which were discovered stranded and cold-stunned on the beaches of Cape Cod in the past week. As a result of the recent cooler weather, strandings are becoming increasing common and workers as well as volunteers are on the lookout for those unfortunate victims. The turtles will be housed at the center anywhere from several months to up to a couple years, while receiving medical care such as fluids and antibiotics. Each turtle is evaluated and either placed in the intensive care incubators or in a pool, depending on the severity of the situation. Releases will take place at the beginning of 2018 for those turtles that have recovered. To ensure a successful transition, they will be transported further south to a warmer climate.
