Coast Guard Partners In Operation To Ensure Successful Reproduction Of Lepidochelys olivacea
Gahirmatha marine sanctuary is a hotspot for nesting sea turtles; however, it is also a prime location for illegal fishing. This creates a highly dangerous situation for the resident sea turtles, as with the fishing comes the risk of injury from nets as well as propellers. As a result, the coast guard has deployed a ship which is implementing 24-hour surveillance as well as an aircraft to prevent these instances. This effort is a partnership with the state forest department known as “Operation Oliva”, and is part of the coast guard’s yearly program to ensure the sea turtles are out of harm’s way during the nesting season. So far the program has been successful, as the rate of illegal fishing has dropped drastically this past month.
