Childhood Tradition blossoms Into 50 Years Of Sea Turtle Conservation

How many people can boast of half a century’s dedication to one of the world’s most endangered animals. Dr. Col Limpus would never have thought that an annual New Year’s tradition of visiting Mon Repos, a prime sea turtle nesting site, would result in just that. And not only has he spent his life working with sea turtles but he even founded the Queensland Turtle Conservation Program. This program has definitely made its mark as 30,000 people attend the Turtle encounter tours each year on Mon Repos. Most importantly, according to Limpus, is raising future generations with a love for these animals and the will to protect them. As a result of Dr. Limpus’ work, the Caretta caretta has rebounded in Queensland, and the hope is that this success will continue and more people will become aware of the plight of these incredible ocean creatures.
