Conservationists Travel Nationwide In A Race To Discover The Nation’s Chelonian Species
“The Big Year” might catch the attention of most dedicated birders, but this Big Year has a totally different motive. It involves George Heinrich and his passion for herptological conservation. This passion is leading him around the United States on a mission to locate every single species that is native to the country. Together with Timothy Walsh, they have waded through swamps, hacked their way through thickets, and dived into lakes as they pursue the Florida Turtle Conservation Trusts Big Turtle Year project. Although the journey has been tough, they have not let any setbacks discourage them, and their travels have rewarded them with the opportunity to observe many of the endangered chelonians within the United States. Heinrich states their goal is to bring conservation awareness to people worldwide, particularly about chelonians. As the project continues, they will travel to Arizona, Louisiana, and Mississippi in the hopes of finding some of the country’s rarest turtle species.
