Latest Illegal Wildlife Trade Analysis Reveals Shocking Statistics And Need For Immediate Action

Asia and Africa are well known for their prominence in the illegal wildlife trade; however, the america’s are shoving their way into the spotlight. A shocking statistic from a recent report by the UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre reveals that a yearly count of 300,000 Podocnemis unifilis are exported from the Amazon, which is a massive increase in recent years. Unfortunately, conservation organizations within the Amazon are in favor of this unsustainable practice due to the turtle “farms” which supposedly reproduce the species and release hatchlings back into the wild. Along with the incredible numbers of other endangered animals being removed from the Amazon, non-native propagation is also occurring in other countries, raising questions over positive outcomes and whether beneficial knowledge can be shared. An important aspect of the report included important data on export levels which will assist in determining sustainable harvest levels. It is critical that regulations are enforced and management policies are created to rescue these animals in danger of extinction.
