Mary Schneider named Pawleys Island citizen of the year

Mary Schneider, leader of the Pawleys Island branch of the South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts, was named the town’s Citizen of the Year at the annual Pawleys Island Civic Association meeting on Sept. 2.

Schneider said she was not expecting the honor, and wanted to share it with the other 50 residents who take turns walking the island’s beach at sunrise every morning during nesting season looking for turtle tracks.

Schneider and her husband, Bill, have owned property on the island since 1964 and made it their permanent home in 1994.

“I have been coming here all my life and I knew about turtles and when I found out there was an effort to protect the nests … I jumped in right away,” Schneider said.

There were no turtle preservation efforts when she was a child, Schneider said, and she can remember people digging up the nests and eating the eggs.

Schneider told the Civic Association members that the number of nests on the island has been growing every year.
