TSA-India Shines Yet Again With Response To Emergency Confiscation Of Melanochelys Tricarinata
The Turtle Survival Alliance is highly active in India, as they work closely with law and wildlife enforcement to halt the progress of the illegal wildlife trade. One of these instances, known as “Operation Kurma”, allowed the organization to put its reputation to the test. Wildlife smugglers were intercepted in Lucknow with a large cargo of Melanochelys tricarinata. After being notified of the situation, TSA-India sprang into action, removing the animals from their imprisonment and administering vital medical care before they were transported to the Kukrail Turtle and Gharial Centre for rehabilitation. They remained in quarantine for 5 months at the facility and did surprisingly well, considering that they produced four hatchlings. After receiving clean bills of health, all the confiscated turtles, along with the new hatchlings, were released at Pilibhit Tiger Reserve. Without the dedication and hard work of the TSA-India and their partners on this and numerous other confiscations, these animals would quickly be wiped out from the faced of the earth. Additional assistance is desperately needed to ensure the continuation of this important work. Read more about this incredible species in the “Blog” section below.
