Data on Astrochelys yniphora Trade Reveals Critically Unsustainable Poaching Levels
Astrochelys yniphora is unarguably one of the most endangered and sought-after chelonians on the planet. Unfortunately this is due to the illegal trade of these magnificent animals, and the species is on the path to extinction if increased efforts are not made to conserve them. The internet has proved to be a major venue for this trade and a recent study has shown that the sale of these animals has dramatically increased via social media, websites, and forums. These online resources provide poachers with a convenient and easy method of marketing the tortoises, and as shown in the study, the majority of traders are located in Indonesia, revealing a lack of concern regarding laws among Indonesian importers and exporters. Due to the fact that law enforcement is lacking in this country, poachers have no means of restraint from marketing their illegal goods; therefore, it is vital that the government re-assess their laws and restrictions in order to prevent these people from sweeping Astrochelys yniphora off the face of the earth.
