Turkey’s sea turtle nesting beaches still need better protection
The MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles) campaigns to improve the protection of loggerhead nesting beaches in Patara and to halt severe degradation in Fethiye, both listed as protected areas under the Barcelona Convention, continued in 2016. They assessed the sites in July and submitted the reports to the Bern Convention. Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles (MEDASSET) was founded in 1988 to protecting marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean. It is an international environmental NGO registered as a charity and limited liability company (LBG) in the UK and a Permanent Observer-Member to the Bern Convention, Council of Europe. MEDASSET is working closely with MEDASSET Greece – a not-for-profit organisation established in 1993 in Greece, which is a partner to the UN Environmental Programme’s Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP).
