New Conservation Steps for Critically Endangered U.S. Native

Glyptemys muhlenbergii, the Bog Turtle, is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, and is native to the eastern United States. The Conservation Trust for North Carolina and the Boone-based Blue Ridge Conservancy recently purchased 179 acres of mixed hardwood forests and pine stands, which included the remains of a pond now turned into a wetland. This wetland is the ideal habitat for Glyptemys muhlenbergii. The land will eventually be donated to National Park Service, in order to further conserve this critical ecosystem. Together, the The Conservation Trust for North Carolina and the Boone-based Blue Ridge Conservancy have protected over 52 acres of habitat, and plan to continue this success to the benefit the native wildlife all over the United States.
