Ontario Does its Part to Conserve Native Species
A clutch of Chelydra serpentina nearly met their end last fall had it not been for the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC). The eggs were laid on a Seneca’s King College campus bridge; however, the bridge was scheduled to be demolished, which would have meant certain death for the hatchlings. The OTCC collected the eggs for artificial incubation and decided to include them as part of their reintroduction program. After successful incubation, hatching, and rearing, they were released into their native habitat yesterday morning. The OTCC created an event out of the release, with the intent of turning it into an educational experience in order to raise awareness for the turtles. The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre is a registered charity as well as a hospital for injured turtles. In 2015 a total of over 1000 turtles were hatched at the center, and they hope to continue their success in order to conserve this under-rated and feared species.

The Asian Turtle Program was established in 1998 and incorporated into the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo/Cleveland Zoological Society’s Asia regional program in 2003. Since the ATP originated with the development of the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) at Cuc Phuong National Park together with there local partner NGO, Education for Nature Vietnam (ENV), they have been working on the conservation of tortoises and freshwater turtles (TFT) in southeast Asia with a focus on Vietnam.
